Cafe Pacifica @ the Pan Pacific

June 30, 2014

Taste of the Prairies: Caramelized shallot bison short rib & grilled Alberta flat iron steak w broccoli rabe & chili, truffle pomme purée, Béarnaise sauce - 2

J's comment > not bad; very tender steak even though it was almost medium, had an almost gristly-like texture that I'm terribly fond of; short rib was very moist, not gamey at all; pomme puree and broccoli were avg, but the Bearnaise was super tasty

Local Four Cheese Ravioli w fire grilled rapini, roasted garlic, red pepper cream sauce - 2

J's comment > not bad; pasta cooked well, cheese on the inside decent but not particularly super-cheesy; could have used more sauce

Warm Tiger Prawn Salad w apple & fennel vinaigrette, lamb lettuce, radish, crisp celery root - 2

J's comment > prawns were crisp but of the defrosted type; the leaves in this salad were warm (thought it would just be the prawns?) which was unusual but OK; vinaigrette was surprisingly creamy given the description; not much fennel flavor thankfully

Nova Scotia Lobster Chowder w smoked P.E.I. potatoes, sweet corn, bacon, tarragon salted cracker - 2

J's comment > very smoky; generous portions of lobster though not of the freshly steamed / boiled variety

Complimentary bread and butter - 2

J's comment > not bad; bread was warm and soft but slightly chewy; butter was salted which is always a bonus

La Mousse au Chocolat du Québec: Thinly spread Okanagan apricot confit, layered between soft flourless chocolate gâteau - 2

J's comment > creamy and very chocolatey, but the layers didn't meld as well as it could have, the cake actually folded in half / toppled over sometimes when I dug in w a fork; slightly dry

Creamy Cheese Parfait: Light cheese parfait & lemon curd, wild Saskatoon berry compote, fresh strawberries - 2

J's comment > flavors of parfait very subtle, faint traces of lemon, hardly any cheese; texture was light though as advertised
