Broken Rice

July 13, 2014

Can Tho Beef Satay Noodles | Hủ Tiếu Sa Tế: Beef and rice noodles in a homemade satay soup w peanuts, coconut, lemongrass and sesame - 2

J's comment > not bad; soup was slightly lacking in quantity though, as you can clearly see from the picture, it was more like a 'sauce' portion than a soup, but the flavor was very good, slightly spicy but tasty w strong notes of coconut; beef was a tad tough, but not bad; rice noodles were avg; the real winner here is the soup/sauce, just wish there was more

Uncle Hing’s Chicken Wings | Cánh Gà Chiên: Tossed in garlic butter - 2

J's comment > not bad; bummer though, not as outstanding as the previous visit's; the most distinctive part of the wings in the last visit was the super garlic butteriness + the generous amts of meat on the chicken wings; this time 'round, the garlic butter was present, but the blend just wasn't as addictive, like a subdued version of last visit's; the wings on this dish were also a tad on the 'skinny' side (AKA, not much meat)

Cabernet Stewed Shank | Bò Kho: Family recipe sixteen hour beef shank, stewed in wine with carrots, onion, and tomato; served w broken rice - 2

J's comment > not bad; tender shank w a tad bit of fat on one edge so that the meat wasn't too dry (still a tad dry on the non-fatty portion); sauce was again lacking in quantity and just a tad salty, but was still very tasty w the rice (see below)

Broken rice - 2

J's comment > not bad; an unusual type of rice; imagine really short grain Jasmine rice; unflavored, but that's what the sauce of the main is for; came w the shank above

Phnom Penh Roll | Bò Bía: Chinese sausage, fried egg, carrot, jicama, basil, lettuce, peanuts; peanut sauce for dipping - 2

J's comment > flavors even more subtle than last visit's; this time 'round, the rolls were more about the texture than flavors; peanut sauce a tad strong given that the roll's flavor was so mild

Shrimp Salad Rolls | Gỏi Cuốn: Shrimp, pork, vermicelli, lettuce, and bean sprout, rice paper, served w peanut sauce - 2

J's comment > slightly better than your avg shrimp salad roll but w more meat than shrimp

Curried Chicken Ballotine | Cà Ri Gà: Chicken dark meat stuffed w minced curried chicken, curry, onion, taro, panko broken rice balls, lotus root chips, yam threads, chili oil, served w a side of steamed rice - 2

J's comment > slightly dry chicken, you definitely need the sauce; loved the complements more than the chicken; taro chips were crisp despite falling in the sauce every now and then; panko rice ball was crusted nicely; didn't really get the chili oil nor the yam threads

Mango Panna Cotta: Cream custard under a mango coulis - 2

J's comment > not bad; creamy panna cotta, not stiff; mango not sweet, just the slightest bit sour
