Nicli's Next Door

August 9, 2014

Reginette, pork ragu napoletana, house bread - 2+

J's comment > just as tasty as the reginette w wild boar ragu I had when Vicino was in operation; pork was very tender and juicy w generous amts provided; in fact, a tad too much; would have loved more pasta to balance out the amt of pork given

Roasted romanesco and sunchoke puree - 2

J's comment > not bad; very crisp romanesco (broccoli / asparagus hybrid); strong sunchoke flavor

Potato zeppole, powdered porcini, fontina D.O.P. - 2

J's comment > not bad; like a 'potato donut' as our server described to us; the zeppole's were fluffy; fontina cheese dip had strong fontina cheese flavor despite being on the runny side; didn't get the porcini at all though

“not scotch egg”: Italian sausage, fior di latte, runny egg yolk, smoked egg white aioli - 2

J's comment > not bad; the crusted outside was the sausage which was decent, went really well w the melty cheese; could have used a lot more aioli though; didn't find the egg yolk at all inside when we cut into this, never mind if it was actually runny or not (although I'm not a fan of egg yolk to begin with)

Cold pea and coppa soup, crème fraiche mousse, citrus preserve - 2

J's comment > this was just a shot of pea soup that you mix in w the creme fraiche mousse on the side (see below for what pea soup + creme mousse looks like); flavor of pea evident; liked the idea of the citrus to break up the heaviness of the pea and creme, but unfortunately needs a lot more citrus than the amt provided; was really hoping for a new pea soup to rid my longing for Mosaic's pea soup which is no longer offered, but unfortunately the pea & creme were a tad one-dimensional together

The "Ferro Rocher": Chocolate ice w hazelnut semifreddo - 2

J's comment > not bad; very creamy ice w strong hazelnut flavor; w the touch of crumble, this was essentially a Ferro Rocher dessert!

Barrel Aged Boulverdier for two: Wild turkey 81, campari, carpano vermouth - 2

J's comment > not bad; smooth, decent portion for a cocktail for 2; the bottle you see arrived full to the top
