Shanghai Xiao Long Bao / 上海九鼎

September 11, 2014

#236 Steamed pork bun (Xiao long bao) - 3

J's comment > very thin wrapper that held up until you nibbled into it, after which you get a burst of flavorful jus; decent amt of meat too; addictive... :D

#257 Pan fried rice cake w greens and shredded pork, shanghai style - 2+

J's comment > rice cakes soft, at the perfect point between al dente and mushy; well seasoned, neither bland nor too salty; would have liked just a tad more meat though, but the rice cakes on their own were impeccable

#106 Crispy fried duck (half portion) - 2+

J's comment > tender duck w crispy skin, exactly as advertised; buns were a good addition to soak up the duck fat, but duck wasn't
 greasy nor heavy;

#212 Fried green beans w minced pork in spicy sauce - 2

J's comment > not bad; tender but firm and crisp beans; spicy sauce wasn't spicy at all actually, just had a slightly numbing sensation on the tongue without burning it through; needs a lot more pork though

#185 Seared scallop, shrimp & squid w crispy rice - 2

J's comment > not bad (for the rice only though); crispy rice exactly that - crisp and crunchy, and absolutely divine when soaked a bit with the soup, to make it just a tad softer; soup was abysmal though, cornstarched w hardly any seafood, definitely no seafood flavor (soup was actually a 1)

#347 Dongpo Pork, Hangzhou style (pork belly stew) - 2

J's comment > very tender pork, well marbled, not too fatty; sadly bland though, the sauce was obviously just poured on top and not stewed w the pork for flavor; what a sad flop from last visit :(

#232 Crispy pork dumplings w Chinese chives & egg - 2

J's comment > kinda like a giant gyoza but w more veggies than the Japanese kind; actually, this dumpling needed a lot more meat to be even considered a 'pork dumpling'; didn't get the egg either; some sauce would have been good too

#171 Fried egg white w shrimps - 1

J's comment > looked, felt and tasted dreadful; texture was rubbery and gummy; flavor was semi-bland; looks like some kind of animal's brain...
