Via Tevere Pizzeria Napoletana

September 2, 2014

Filetto: San Marzano tomato fillets, fior di latte, garlic, basil - 2

J's comment > not bad; loved the tomatoes, very concentrated flavor; decent amt of cheese; crust OK, non-soggy anywhere but a tad hard along the edge - this was not a crust I can and will willingly eat (ie. Bufala!); a chili olive oil (not spicy at all actually) was provided on every table which helped to douse the crust in, but like our table and many others around, lots of crust were left uneaten - not so in the case of Bufala...

Quattro Formaggi: Fior di latte, ricotta, smoked provolone, parmigiano - 2

J's comment > not bad; crust equally as good as the one above; decent amt of cheese, but would have liked a stronger flavored cheese, didn't get the smokiness at all - dare I say it, actually a tad bland

Frittura Napoletana (vegetarian) (double): A sampling of fried Neapolitan street fare - 2

J's comment > not bad; loved the sausage like fritters which were creamy mashed potatoes w cheese w thin crisp exterior (would happily trade everything else on this plate for more of these)

round risotto balls on the far left were also not bad; similar to the ones from Caffe Roma, but these were firmer in texture and the rice inside were more al dente; amt of cheese was OK

round dough balls on the far right were the pizza dough but in ball shape and deep fried; light texture, different from the oven baked pizza dough, but somehow similar

square mac & cheese fritters were slightly firmer than I' prefer, more mac than cheese; same crisp exterior as the other fritters on the plate, but not as obvious w the semi-firm mac

Polpette della Nonna: Homestyle meatball in tomato sauce - 2

J's comment > very soft meatball, to the point of mushiness... tasted more like breading than beer actually; sauce OK, slightly tart

Tris di Dolci

Tiramisu: An Italian classic made in house daily, layers of coffee drenched lady fingers w Mascarpone cream - 2

Graffe con Nutella: Handmade Neapolitan fritters made to order dusted w sugar and cinnamon and drizzled w Nutella - 2

Torta Caprese: From the Isle of Capri, a rich chocolate cake made w roasted almonds and walnuts and a hint of orange, completely flourless and gluten free - 2

J's comment > tiramisu was the best one of the bunch, very moist and creamy, decent amt of espresso; would have liked some liquor in it, though Via Tevere didn't list that they added liquor to their version of tiramisu;

chocolate donut was very light and airy; reminiscent of the pizza dough ball fritter above, but in sweet form w chocolate flavor;

flourless chocolate cake was not the rich dense chocolate truffle that I expected; although the description read 'flourless', the texture was quite 'floury', somewhere in between a mealy and crumbly texture; not sweet, not rich, not creamy - cake for people on a diet
