Mega Sushi in Richmond

October 5, 2014

Mega Tower: Assorted sashimi placed on top of sushi rice in a tower-like shape w organic vegetable and apple sauce, balsamic vinegar and homemade special sauce - 3

J's comment > insanely fresh fish and well balanced flavors, the perfect amt of ponzu, making even the fronds so palatable I willingly cleared half the leaves on the plate on my own (no easy feat on my part); essentially a deconstructed sashimi on sushi rice, but so well done!

Godzilla Bite: Deep fried seaweed and rice w tuna, salmon, torched spicy chop and alfalfa on top w special sauce - 2

J's comment > not bad; loved the crispy rice (kinda like the rice you get at the bottom of the chinese style casserole pot - Bo Tsai Fan); flavors OK, your avg fillings of a typical sushi roll, the crispy rice was definitely the highlight

Miso soup - 2

J's comment > not bad; mild and pleasant flavor, not too salty or 'fake'

Cherry blossom roll: Avocado, cucumber, imitation crab in a roll w salmon, avocado, apple sauce, caper, tobiko on top - 2

J's comment > way too much crab to everything else; didn't get the apple

Crispy and crunchy roll: Prawn tempura, imitation crab, cucumber, avocado in a roll w crunch and spicy sauce on top - 2

J's comment > tasted the same as the Cherry Blossom roll above (again, too much crab to everything else), except w crispy bits this time; sauce not spicy actually

Chicken teriyaki - 2

J's comment > passable chicken, slightly firm, could be a lot juicier, definitely not as well done as 2 years ago

Monkey Brain: Deep fried avocado w crab meat and cooked tuna replacing the seed w spicy sauce - 2

J's comment > not a fan of the crust; avocado ripe but flavors were essentially the same as the rolls above, but without the rice

Avocado and tamago nigiri - 2

Toro and red tuna nigiri - 1

J's comment > shockingly, the fresh fish we encountered in all the dishes above did not carry over to the nigiris; the fish were fishy and slightly mushy, I had to spit these out; avocado and tamago were OK, but the tamago was sadly of the microwaved variety
