Black Rice Izakaya

March 26, 2015

J-maki: Radish sprout, prawn tempura, crabmeat, cucumber, avocado - 2

J's comment > not bad; named after me! (no, not really, just a fortunate coincidence); ingredients OK, but a bit too much rice in ratio to everything else

Aburi hamachi nigiri - 2

J's comment > hamachi fresh enough, but nothing outstanding

Guacamole Gunkan nigiri - 2

J's comment > ripe avocado; a bit too much rice

Black Rice Roll: Pacific black cod, avocado, cream cheese, black rice - 2

J's comment > black rice was intriguing, slightly chewier than 'regular' rice; decent amt of avocado & cream cheese; didn't get much of the cod though it was there

Tamago Goma: House made grilled egg w goma-dare sesame sauce - 2

J's comment > tamago passable, second 'best' after Sada-san's, but didn't work as well on paper as suggested w the goma-dare (touch too salty for the tamago)

Buta Donburi: Rice bowl w pork belly simmered w special shoyu - 2

J's comment > pork belly overcooked, a bit dry, but flavor OK; again, a bit too much rice to pork

Teishoku A: Aburi spicy salmon hato, Chef's selection of aburi sushi and sashimi w guacamole, side of beef karaage, agedashi tofu, oshinko, green salad & miso soup - 2

J's comment > decent selection of advertised items; beef karaage was a bit on the hard and chewy side but definitely interesting; aburi seafood were OK; everything else was also passable but not spectacular

Teishoku E: Spicy tuna sashimi, spicy tuna roll w avocado, tuna, cucumber maki, side of agedashi tofu, oshinko, green salad & miso soup - 2

J's comment > funny, the spicy tuna roll was actually spicier than the sashimi; everything else was good but average
